Medieval Video Notes: Italian Renaissance

  • Medici was born into the Mediveal world
  • Famous artists, scientists and philosophers: Michaelangelo, Da Vinci, Galileo
  • Men scoured Europe for treasures
  • Medici and his friends were searching for secrets of the ancient world
  • Ancient learning was brought to Europe
  • 1440 Florance - republic in which powerful families fought with each other for ultimate power
  • Medici had risen to a higher standard because of his skills in marketing
  • the papacy was up for grabs
  • 1410 - Baldassare Cossa elected pope. He remembered his friends; The Medici. He needed a bank he could trust.
  • The city looked for fresh ideas
  • The city offered a large cash prize for the solution for the church's dome.
  • Medici and his father stood in power for the family
  • 1419 - a new orphanage in Florance became a center for Filippo Brunelleschi's ideas and such
  • He sparked architectural revolution across Europe
  • every family tried to get power through deals and private meetings. Then they tired to get their ideas to the people and have people write about them.
  • The city of Florence mourned the death of Medici
  • Giovanni Medici's death made his son, Cosimo, nervous about ruling just as well as his father.
  • How was Cosimo going to keep out of the public eye?
  • Brunelleschi Engineer and architect !
  • Cosimo was at the mercy of his enemies.
  • "He was imprisoned, accused for the failure of the conquest of Lucca, but he managed to turn the jail term into one of exile. He went to Padua and then to Venice, taking his bank along with him."
  • "Prompted by his influence and his money, others followed him: within a year, the flight of capital from Florence was so great that the ban of exile had to be lifted. Cosimo returned a year later in 1434, to greatly influence the government of Florence".
  • The family who governed Florence was the Albizzi, and they turned against their people as well as led them into wrong.
  • Cosimo wanted to avenge the Albizzi family.
  • The Medici family collected money from every archbishop. The bank earned enough money to build 10 palaces
  • Cosimo was the most sought after patron of art
  • Brunelleschi continued to break boundaries. He created linear perspective.
  • Brunelleschi proved everyone wrong and completed the dome, miraculously.
  • 37,000 tons and 4 million bricks made up the dome. This proved "man could conquer the seemingly impossible" .
  • "It touches the sky and casts a shadow over the whole of Tuscany" - Cosimo's friend.
  • Art and architecture was bringing together more artists and thinkers than ever before.
  • Cosimo has seen the triumph of his city, but remained a cautious man.
  • 1464 Cosimo died. FATHER OF THE FATHERLAND.
  • WHO WOULD LEAD NEXT?
  • The Medici were in danger of losing control of the city to other powerful families
  • Medici need back up by military forces
  • Lorenzo the Magnificent marries a baron's daughter and a cardinal's niece. This establishes a noble bond for the Medici family.
  • Botticelli was a painter who placed the Medici family at the heart of the nativity. This gave him brownie points with he Medici.
  • Botticelli created a type of art called the spring. It was based on fantasy and inspired by poetry and imagination.
  • "Boss of the Shop", Lorenzo Medici, inherits the throne.
  • The Pazzi are the second richest family.
  • Mafia atmosphere during this time. The Pazzi wanted to kill the Medici.
  • Giuliano was stabbed 9 times and died instantly. Lorenzo was injured but remained alive.
  • The supporters of Medici were so angry they were ready to kill the conspirators. The murder of Giuliano on Easter Sunday sent a shock way through Tuscany. Medici power was hanging by a thread. The Pope was ordering to end the Medici family once and for all.
  • 1479, Lorenzo arrives in Naples. He's hoping to negotiate with the Pope. He arrives bearing gifts and money. Lorenzo de Medici saves Florence from destruction. Now, the Medici needed all the heirs they could get.
  • Leonardo de Vinci - his talent was hard to ignore. He painted angels in vibrant oils, which had never been tried before.
  • July 29th 1487 Lorenzo's wife died suddenly of tuberculosis.
  • Lorenzo found solace in art and established the first art school in history.
  • Michaelangelo was in Lorenzo's art school when he was only 13. Lorenzo brought Michaelangelo under his wing, and into his family.
